CLASS BREAKDOWN

Residencies are different for every school.  The following outline is a guide that has worked with many residencies in the past.

MONDAY

Mime: Introductory theatre - Mime/ Movement technique, creation of mime illusions and
rudimentary character development. Learning effective communication with the body.  Because our society is so verbal based (compared to European and Asian cultures where the larger number of languages encourage a stronger element of physical communication) we often forget about the 'physical learners'.  Skills learned in Mime technique encourage Kinesthetic/Tactile thinkers to learn in all areas.

TUESDAY

Improvisation techniques Improvising isn't just random comments created by comedians.  Lawyers, Managers and business people learn technical improvising skills, (blocking, wimping and hedging)  to improve their spontaneity and creative thinking skills.
We will  learn the skills through interactive theatre games. This class USUALLY leaves the planned activity to address the specific classes needs (Co-operation difficulties, risk taking, being positive, concentration, etc).  Generally we will be working on developing creativity and positive attitudes. (teachers often benefit from the skills offered in this part of the residency)

WEDNESDAY

Story telling and story creation technique - Adding on to the previous days work, the students will start develop their ideas in a more concentrated way. We will look at structures of stories and create them.  Students will improve self esteem and become aware of bettering their group dynamics as they express their ideas. We will create: brief scenes beginning scripts. Also a chance for development of ideas for a week's end show.

THURSDAY

Character development. An exploration into the differences between people and how we all 'work'.  Student will deepen the appreciation they should be developing in previous classes for various learning styles and differences between people.  Confidence and Shy-ness are explored in the status work.  Also a portion of this class is devoted to the fear of trying, and failing to improve risk taking and expression.

FRIDAY

Utilizing theatre skills to create a performance piece (solo and groups) The week's work
will be incorporated into a session of putting the knowledge into practice. Also; how to
rehearse effectively and wrap up.

* Some schools choose to have an end of the week performance. Some choose in class performances.  Some choose to continue with instructional classes.

With shows -  The show at the end of the week is usually a compilation of scenes based on what is important to the students and
what they've learned through the week.  It is important for teachers to raise all limitations which the school will impose on students' ideas with Shawn before the residency begins.

BACK to RESIDENCY

OBJECTIVES BUDGET

Variations:

One school chose to work purely with character building and circus skills for a show they were working on.
Another school improvised day by day so that students would never know when I was visiting their class or what I would be doing.   (we ended up integrating arts and the curriculum - so I taught Religion, Social, Music English, Phys-ed and Drama classes their own subject from a new perspective)
One school chose to stretch their residency over FIVE weeks over the year to give their students a long term involvement in the topics.
A school raised extra money by ending their residency with a buffet dinner and show for the community put on by the students.
There was the school who utilized their school theme of "Stop the Bullying" into every aspect of the residency.
Instead of a Christmas concert organized by a few teachers, the performance of the residency became the seasonal celebration in a non denominational way.
Most school bring Shawn in and say, "Go for it!" based on the structure to the left.
