OBJECTIVE -

Of course the objective in every residency is unique to the specific school.  Here are some "ideals" that Shawn works towards.

The course focus will be on the theatre arts as an outlet for creativity, expression and understanding. I hope that the students will gain an understanding of both the art they are experiencing and their own ability to learn about themselves and others through theatre.  The aim is on developing the entire person - not on making performers.

Each theatre lesson will strive to instill more important lessons in co-operation, motivation, confidence, communication, positive attitudes and self image.  Other lessons will focus on spontaneity, risk taking and developing positive group structures.

When I teach, I try to make the learning process broad and relevant to as many of the students as possible. I try to teach the students to "Learn how to Learn".  Artists and Performers often have to be explorers and scientists in their own right and must know the skills needed to learn. In the class the students are encouraged to teach themselves based on the "suggestions" of the workshop leader.  They need to know their strengths and weaknesses in their particular learning styles.

Objectives will be to get the Visual learners to see a better way of  learning, the auditory learners to listen to all the possibilities and the Kinesthetic learners to experience the lesson in a tactile way.  As different is the objective for each school, so should the means for reaching the objectives be different for each student.   Athletes in the class will improve their co-ordination and agility, dancers find  new ways of expression. Students will gain confidence by learning about him/herself.

Above all I hope that the students leave the program with a more open minded, questioning and expressive way of living. I hope Teachers who have the time to watch or even be part of the process will gain knowledge and resource ideas for their further teaching.

As far as specific needs, it will be necessary to have a large enough space for moving around, unobstructed by chairs etc. For some of the classes it will be beneficial to have access to a cassette player. (some schools have made the gymnasium available, some have given me class rooms to work in with the chairs and desks pushed to the side. Both situations work fine.)
