WHAT IS A RESIDENCY?

Shawn has been conducting successful residencies for two decades.

An Example:
A Residency  is an intensive series of workshops lasting more than three days.  A typical Residency may last five days and include over three hundred participants in as many as 6 different classes a day.
The first day might cover mime.
The second day would introduce improvisation.
On the third there would be Character and Narrative development.
The Fourth day might see participants developing a performance and...
The final day would conclude a rehearsal period and presentation.

"We are pleased strongly and enthusiastically recommend this residency to other schools."
Irwin E. Warkentin, Principal Vauxhall School

Customized Residency:
The adaptable nature of Shawn's work allows for very customizable residencies that give specific information to the needs of the group he is working with. In consultation with you he will develop a residency that suits your group.

Also, "...I try to focus less on performance for performance sake and more on how the skills benefit the individual in every day life. Creativity, Co-operation, Communication, Spontanaiety and Confidence are the goals."

The specific information below can be used in application to such funding groups as the Alberta Artist in the School Residency Program.

Arts for Everyday:

A typical 5-day residency will engage students in MIME, IMPROVISATION, NARRATIVE and CHARACTER development to encourage learning skills, creativity, spontaneity, and co-operation.    Many schools choose to end a residency with a performance created by the students and directed by Shawn.  Every residencey is suited to the schools needs. School themes and specific topics are often incorporated.

“Many parents talked about how their usually quiet, introverted children became animated as they related to the events of their class with Shawn.  Parents enthusiastically declared that it was the best thing to happen at the school and that everyone had benefited from the Shawn Kinley artist in residence week.  We would recommend him highly”

-Teacher, Kathyrn School

“Shawn's manner with students was one which encouraged experimentation and risk taking in a focused, and encouraging but disciplined atmosphere.  This was readily evident in their eagerness to attend his classes and in their many positive comments shared with teachers and parents.

-A. Verdiel, Principal - Killarney School";

The Alberta Foundation for the Arts may cover up to 75% of the costs for a residency at your school.  If you are applying for a grant to bring Shawn into your school, you might find the following information useful:
