Performance

PHYSICAL THEATRE

Everyone asks, "What do you do?"  I used to categorize my performances so people could attach some frame of reference. " I do mime" or" I perform with masks…" but that just seemed too limiting.

If I say "Mime", don't most of you think of the annoying guy with the white makeup who follows people around the streets with the target of disdain painted on his imaginary wall and walk in the wind?

So, I have a number of "PHYSICAL PERFORMANCES".  Some shows incorporate Masks while others involve non language based situations with characters that I play but, it's much more interesting than the description.  (or… I hope it is.)

Shawn Kinley With the SPAGHETTI MASK Performed in Germany

In one scene I am a masked character in an Italian restaurant looking for the perfect pasta dinner.  Without a nose, eyes or mouth I have to discover a new way to take in my meal.  Any child who has played with hs food will know where the inspiration came from.

In another scene a brand new sweater ends up in a thousand pieces and I end up in a suit that I hadn't expected.

I've performed in Gallery's, Palaces, Theatres, Basements, schools, Festivals, in a typhoon, while being stalked by an obsessed fan, by the ocean, desert and dessert.  I've entertained kids, business folk, adults in various states of coherence, other performers, men, women, families, strangers, cats and dogs.

From Movies to Television, Street to Stage I would say that my favourite audience is the one that wants me to come back.

IMPROVISATION:

When I'm home in Canada, I might be Improvising any Friday or Saturday at the Loose

Moose Theatre in Calgary

Shawn Kinley improvises in NorwayWhen I am travelling I often am a guest improviser in various improvised shows as a director or performer.  Check my SCHEDULE page to see where I might be coming up. (and no, I don't speak any language fluently enough to improvise in another language besides this crappy English language I speak so poorly, BUT it's easy to share languages and perform physically.  I've had the pleasure to work in Finnish, Norwegian, Japanese, Swedish, Dutch, Flemish, German, Swiss and EVEN American…)

WORK UNDER CONSTRUCTION

The TV MASK

In 2009 at the Loose Moose Theatre, a group of performers got together to perform an evening of solo shows.  My offering was a 30 minute show called TURN ME ON.  The show was a series of interviews and stories by various people who I played.

The characters were played through the video interviews worn on my face  – a TV Mask.

TURN ME ON   was a risque show about the hot and vulnerable side of people's lives when they are behind closed doors or flirting in front of the doors they wish to open.

That show  inspired a piece of work under progress.  As I travel the world I have been talking to people on every continent about who they are.  Eventually the interviews will become the basis of a show about who we all are, what makes us unique and how similar we are to the rest of the people on the planet.

The tentative title of the show is "CITIZEN OF THE WORLD".
