There is a subtly understood rift between the Arts and Business. One is the work and meat of life. The other is the “extra” stuff that happens when the “real” work is done. But… look at the most successful people in any field
and you will see people that naturally embody the qualities of an artist.

If you are looking here, you might be looking for a little more reason to investigate this area for you or your business. (If you aren’t, then please be patient while I do a little selling job).

In science – - – Einstein said “Imagination is more important than knowledge”. If you aren’t sold on the idea that imagination has worth, consider the invention of Velcro, the Microwave Oven, the Post It note. These lucrative inventions all came about when an imaginative person was involved in a failed experiment, but instead of giving up, that person imagined a productive use for the “failure”.
Our world has changed because of those who imagine and embrace the offers they are given EVEN if the offer seems by others as an initial failure.
-
This of course is just ONE area of improvisation that has worth. Here’s another example concerning expressiveness for the scientific mind:

In the Military – - -Ever read BLINK by Malcom Gladwell? Read the section about the General placed in an undependable position. He wins against his more strongly funded, manned and armed opponents on a consistent basis. “Creative” thinking, spontaneous reactions and acceptance of unorthodox possibilities gives him the edge that others ignore.

In business Management – - – Pixar, The Body Shop, Amazon, Google… The names should be enough to argue the worth of another approach. (see PIXAR’s Randy Nelson on Learning and Working in the Collaborative Age.

Enough selling. There is great worth in the techniques. Those that take advantage, gain an advantage over those who don’t.

I’ve worked for telecommunication companies, Engineering organisations, Political, Millitary, Transportation, production and public relations organisations. Each group displays their own set of challenges, problems and strengths. What has been important, is to:
1) Magnify the strengths without getting weighed down by them (How many organisations fail because they have used an historical Strength as a crutch only to see the times change. Unable to adapt, the strength is like a weight that pulls them down).
2) Recognize the problems and face them with a good nature. The attitude can be the hardest thing to change. If an organization exists in a positive state of mind, problems are solved much quicker.

All things are possible. Imagine what your organization could be.
